Kita’s Chonicles: Convo with son

Day 2 NaBloPoMo

My son is 6 years old…..a Gemini…into video games and music. He does not go outside and play he is very very talkative and he is a sweetheart. He gives me no problems and hardly talks back. The only thing that concerns me is the way he eats good gawd. When I pick him up from school this is normally how our conversation goes the entire evening. NOTE: this takes place practically every single day

Picks son up at 2:15

Son: *get’s in car* Mom I am hungry

Let me stop right here and say I pack him a full lunch for school which includes a meat, fruit, something to drink, chips, and something sweet. They eat lunch at 11 and I fix him a full breakfast in the morning.

Me: Well good evening how was school what did you learn

Son: Nothing, mom did you bring me something to eat

Me: No we will eat dinner when we get home

We get home around 3 he does his normal activity

Son: (3:30) Mom I am dying of hunger I am soooooo hungry.

Me: I am about to start dinner go ahead and do your hw while I cook

Son: Mom I am so hungry I can’t do any homework can I get a snack

Me: No I want you to eat all of your dinner so no snack you won’t die if you wait until 5:30 (this is usually the time we sit down to eat because of football practice at 6:30)

Son: (4:00) Mom can I get something to drink I really want something to eat but if you give me juice I won’t bother you until later

Son: (Later being around 5) Mom my stomach is talking to me and it says it’s hungry when will we be able to eat I am soooo hungry

We eat at 5:30 then go to practice it ends at 8 we get back home…..

Son: Mom I am sooooo hungry can I get some more food

Hubs steps in at this point

Hubs: Hell no ain’t you already ate dinner shut that shit down. Drink some water and take your behind to bed and don’t ask for nothing else to eat or drink.

Silence…….

Conclusion I just can’t afford to feed him like this if it’s bad at this age what will happen when he gets to be a teenager I just don’t understand it. He only wears 45 lbs where does the food go because he is not growing at all. It’s like I can’t keep bread, milk, or eggs in this house to last an entire week. And don’t get me started on the girl……I have had to cut back on my servings just so they can have 2 go rounds.

Smh, I was just talking to my husband today about how I thought I had a few more years before my toddler eating actually started to affect the grocery budget! This girl goes through so much bread, milk, cheese, and peanut butter! And she can go through a whole pound of sandwich meat by herself in a week!

My son eats lunch at 11:30 and has a snack at 3. By the time he gets home at 5:30 he’s hungry and ready to eat dinner. What can I say, he’s a growing boy. He has a snack before breakfast in the morning too. He’s about to turn three. We’re going to be grocery shopping every other day by the time he’s 5! Crazy. :)

Kids eat so much these days. I know my daughter does. She’ll eat 5 slices of pizza and 2 hamburgers plus whatever is on the side. My girls always come in from school asking for food. During the summer I never thought we could keep enough food in the house.

I give my kids a snack after school. Just something small so that it doesnt ruin their appetite. They eat lunch early too so if they didnt get a chance to eat from 11:30 to 6:00 (when I ususlly get dinner done) they would be really hungry. I think a snack afterschool is reasonable. But dinner 1 before practice and dinner 2 after practice is a little much though.

  5. I think it is reasonable to give him a small, healthy snack after school. If he eats lunch at 11 and then nothing again until 5:30, that’s a long time between meals, IMO.

And yes, I hear boys start eating and don’t stop. I have a friend with 3 boys and they can’t keep enough food in the house!

Kids do eat a lot! LOL BUT I remember growing up…we were hungry when we got home from school too….lol – My mom didn’t fix us anything. Since, I was the oldest. I would fix something for everyone to eat…like a sandwich or something. Then dinner later, that evening.

My son is 6 and he is hungry too, when he gets home from school at 5:30. I fix him breakfast at 7am, lunch at 11:30, they have a snack in their class at 1pm, then in the Afterschool program they give them another snack around 3pmish. By the time I pick him up…he is hungry. Its recommended we eat 5 small meals a day every 3 hours….to keep our metabolism going.

If you solve that mystery let me know cause after 12 years I still haven’t figured it out. My kids put away food like it is going out of style. They will eat all day if I let them.

  8. Rosesdaughter says:

Pookah gets a full breakfast( he insists on oatmeal) they have lunch at 11. He gets a snack at 330. He is asking for a another snack when he gets in my car around 5. He eats dinner around 6. And wants seconds and thirds. And milk.
Sigh. For someone who can’t eat wheat, he eats a LOT.
    I’m dreading the teenage years.
